Therapeutic area distribution by WHO guideline (2017-2022)
Oncology represented the largest share of clinical trials, accounting for 24% of the total. Infectious disease research made up 12%, while neurology trials comprised 10%. Hematology studies accounted for 8%, and endocrinology trials represented 6%. Trials related to respiratory issues and dermatology each constituted 5%, whereas cardiovascular and psychiatry trials both made up 4%. Rheumatology and ophthalmology studies each contributed 3%. The remaining clinical trials, categorized as "Other," represented 16% of the total conducted during this period.

Trend analysis of active trials in the AdisInsight database
According to the AdisInsight database, for “Active” trials, oncology accounted for the largest proportion of clinical trials, with 15,477 trials. Research in gastrointestinal disorders comprised 7,113 trials, while immunology studies represented 5,379 trials. Endocrinology research made up 4,923 trials, and respiratory trials totaled 4,838. The cardiovascular therapeutic area included 4,358 trials, and the "Others" category encompassed 4,520 trials.

Trend analysis of suspended/discontinued trials in the AdisInsight database
According to the AdisInsight database, oncology represented the largest share of "Suspended/Discontinued" clinical trials, with 3,262 trials. Gastrointestinal disorders accounted for 1,655 trials, while endocrinology research included 1,534 trials. Respiratory studies made up 1,298 trials, and neurology trials totaled 1,289. Immunology trials reached 1,278, while the cardiovascular therapeutic area contributed 1,234 trials.

According to the AdisInsight database, the "Others" category held the largest share of "Completed" clinical trials, with 9,254 trials. Oncology comprised 8,196 trials, while endocrinology research accounted for 7,938 trials. Cardiovascular studies made up 7,683 trials, and gastrointestinal trials totaled 7,122. Neurology trials reached 6,902, while respiratory research contributed 5,888 trials.
